December 14, 1931

"Scene within the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City December 12, as an estimated half a million people visited the basilica in ceremonies  which marked the 400th anniversary of the supposed appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's Patron saint, to a humble Indian. The celebration drew the wrath of El Nacional, organ of the National Revolutionary (Government) Party. It devoted considerable space in its sheet to an attack on the clergy and the church. The war Department dismissed its headquarters band from the army because it gave an unauthorized concert at the celebration at the Basilica."
