"The devout in Mexico, as they have for hundreds of years, still crawl on their knees to the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the most sacred spot in Mexico. But they can no longer go inside - The 400 year old church is closed pending repairs. The situation is typical of the church of Mexico. Devotion remains, bu the church's wealth and power have crumbled, in part because of constitutional prohibitions that prove the determination never to let the church rival the government again."
